Team Projects & Initiatives
Reading Initiative
This volunteer reading initiative was held in 2nd grade classrooms at Spring Creek Elementary. 13 volunteers worked with students in small group intervention. Evidence-based reading curriculum was provided with a daily focus area along with learning games. The volunteers worked with the students Mon-Fri for 1 hour starting January-April, clocking 520 volunteer hours. The average word count per minute increased by 55 words and their test scores increased by 33%. We are hoping to expand the program to 3 new locations within the School District of Lee County next school year.
Family Literacy Project
FutureMakers Coalition began the Family Literacy pilot project at Tice Elementary School, funded by the Lee County Industrial Development Authority. In partnership with the District’s Adult & Career Education department the project provided literacy support and assistance for delivering quality instructional ESOL programs and service to 14 Hispanic adults and their 13 children in the 2024-25 school year. The program includes structured literacy-focused parent and child time. Both parents and children are engaged in various activities to stimulate additional learning. In the first semester, 58% of the students in the program made learning gains. In the grade 3-5 group, 75% of the students made gains that were larger in comparison to the growth made by their school and district level peers. The adults are learning English, engaging in a family activity with the children, and partner organizations providing workforce readiness and other wrap-around services to support the families.
Early Childhood Education Team
This team is currently reforming and working to collect data to decide on what we would like to do together to improve kindergarten readiness for our region.
HIPPY Project – in home preschool co-op pilot
Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) is an evidence-based, in-home program designed to help parents who are not able to enroll their children in preschool/VPK prepare their child for kindergarten with proven curriculum. We aim to identify small communities/cohorts of parents who have had to find their own solutions to childcare and help them to work together to teach the curriculum and collaborate on childcare needs. Ideally, this would also become an entrepreneurial opportunity for provider be them grandparents, neighbors, parents or friends that help to provide care.
